Our curriculum centers on hands-on creation, live performance environments, and collaborative studio sessions. Students engage in both solo artistic development and coordinated group events:
1. Large-Scale Mural & Graffiti Design Labs
The Discipline: Master spray canopy dynamics, line control, color blending, cap pressure manipulation, and scaling small-concept sketches up to multi-story architectural surfaces.
The Practical Events:
Solo Wall Showcases: Students are assigned designated practice walls to design, grid, and execute original solo murals from concept sketch to sealed finish.
Community Collaborative Murals: Group events where teams plan and execute unified, large-scale public murals—learning site prep, scaffold/ladder safety, wall priming, and section coordination under live event conditions.
2. Live Observational & Portraiture Paint-Offs
The Discipline: Fast-paced, intuitive execution of classical artistic concepts using acrylics, aerosol, oils, and mixed media in live, timed environments.
The Practical Events:
Live Portraiture & Figure Labs: Group painting sessions featuring live models, exploring lighting, anatomical proportion, skin tones, and expressive brushwork.
Prompt-Driven Still Life & Narrative Scenes: Fast-response painting challenges where students interpret complex still-life arrangements or thematic creative prompts under timed studio conditions, followed by peer critique and technical analysis.
3. Performative & Speed Painting Exhibits
The Discipline: Integrating performance art with visual creation—executing artwork live in front of audiences, timed challenges, and rhythm-based visual painting.
The Practical Events: Synchronized live-painting showcases during community events, pairing music, choreography, and audience engagement with rapid-canvas deployment.
4. Aerosol Chemistry, Stenciling & Surface Prep
The Discipline: Understanding substrate materials, surface adhesion, outdoor weatherproofing, custom multi-layer stencil cutting, and airbrush integration.
The Practical Lab: Hands-on testing of primers, sealants, nozzle types (fat caps, calligraphy tips, skinniest), color theory layering, and protective topcoats across wood, masonry, metal, and canvas.
Behind every striking mural is rigorous planning, geometry, and material science. Students commit to structured classroom hours covering the foundational concepts of public art:
Grid Mathematics & Proportion Scaling: Utilizing grid systems, digital projection, and golden-ratio proportions to scale a 9x12 sketch onto a 20x40-foot wall.
Color Theory & Atmospheric Perspective: Understanding hue relationships, value contrast, color temperature, and depth perception across massive viewing distances.
Pigment Chemistry & Substrate Dynamics: Studying paint viscosity, binder degradation, UV resistance, vapor pressures, and environmental curing conditions across variable surfaces.
Public Art Permitting & Legal Compliance: Navigating municipal zoning, property owner releases, copyright/intellectual property standards, and commercial commission agreements.
Working with industrial coating materials, elevated equipment, and public surfaces requires strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Respiratory & Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Mandatory Respiratory Protection: Fit-tested NIOSH-approved OV/P100 organic vapor respirators are mandatory during all aerosol, spray, and chemical sealant labs.
Eye & Skin Protection: Safety goggles and protective clothing/coveralls are required to prevent chemical exposure and solvent contact.
Studio & Environmental Protocols
Ventilation & Air Monitoring: Indoor spray labs take place strictly within designated, high-volume exhaust booths equipped with active filtration systems.
Waste Disposal & Overspray Mitigation: Proper containment of hazardous waste, solvent rag disposal, paint can recycling, and mandatory drop-cloth containment to prevent ground contamination.
Liability & Property Releases: All public wall projects are executed on authorized TVPG property or fully permitted community sites under formal legal site-use agreements.
